I know I talk about my Cricut a lot, but honestly that is because I freaking *love* it. It’s also probably the thing I get the most DMs about with questions, and with the holidays quickly approaching I’m sure there’s many of you who are either thinking about asking for one, or purchasing one for someone, so I thought I would write a post to help you make that decision.
(Side note: Anyone else feel like you’re scrambling this year? I swear, December just snuck up on us and I am NOT prepared for the holidays!! Send help.)
Anyways, for this post I’m rounding up some of the most common asked questions about my Cricut Maker. Let’s start with the basics!
Q: What the heck is a Cricut? And is it pronounced like the bug or like “circuit”?
A: First of all, it’s pronounced like the bug. Now that we have that out of the way, a Cricut machine is an electronic personal cutting machine! Think of it as a die-cutter. It can cut almost any material (more on that later) so it’s a must-have for anyone who loves crafting or is a self-proclaimed DIY expert like yours truly.

Q: Great, but what can I actually make with it?
A: A simpler question would be “what can’t I make it with?” because you can make almost anything with it. Yeah, I went there.
Cricut has this really handy tool DesignSpace, and in DesignSpace there are over 3,000 (and growing) Make It Now projects. These are projects that are pre-designed by the Cricut team! They range from every type of skill level and materials.
Want something custom? No problem! DesignSpace also allows you to create new designs using a library of hundreds of fonts, shapes, vector images and lines.
Q: Okay… but what if I want to design my own stuff?
A: That’s awesome, because that’s not a problem either!
If you are design-savvy, it’s super easy to create your own design in Illustrator and import the files into DesignSpace. I actually do this for most of my projects.

Q: But what can it actually cut?
A: Almost everything.
I’m not even joking.
Cricut machines can both cut hundreds of different types of materials, and the Cricut Maker can cut even more. I’m talking everything from paper, cardstock, iron-on designs, vinyl, chipboard, basswood (yes wood), leather, fabric (!!!) and more!
The Maker also recently released several new tools that allow you to deboss and engrave things! I can’t wait to see what types of tools and materials they have in store for next year.
Starting to see what I mean when I said it’s a crafter’s dream machine?
Q: So why does Jane/Joe/Little Sally/or myself need it?
A: Between all the different materials and design capabilities, you can make anything you can dream of. I’m serious. Cards, stationary, labels, custom clothing and accessories, wine glasses and mugs, engraved jewelry, decor items, you name it!
It’s also not just great for crafters, it’s good for anyone who likes a DIY solution. If you’re a teacher, you can use it to make decorations for your classroom or even activities for your class.
If you love keeping everything as organized as possible (cue: Monica Geller), you can create custom labels for anything and everything at the click of a button.
Here are some projects I’ve made using mine:
Still can’t decide? Here’s every post I’ve ever done on the Cricut machines!
