In Southern Ontario, Fall also tends to be our shortest season of the year. (Which sucks because it’s my favourite.)
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, fall is my absolute favourite season for a lot of reasons but one of them is because of fall fashion.
Unfortunately, if you live in Canada like me (or somewhere that gets equally as cold), sometimes a lot of the trends aren’t the most practical choice of clothing for the entire Fall/Winter fashion season – especially when it comes to ensembles that don’t involve pants.
It doesn’t matter if it’s a cute skirt or dress – bare legs and 6ft deep snow just don’t mix.
Having a completely separate wardrobe for winter is a little unrealistic for me as well, it would cost way too much and take up way too much space, so I like to try and find pieces that I can easily transition to winter. Sweater dresses, believe it or not, are actually great for this.
Sweater dresses have always been one of my absolute fall fashion items. Not only are they super comfy, but they easily create a cozy and chic look. I personally love how they look when when paired with some fall boots and a cute hat, like I did here.

Unfortunately, there’s usually only a short time of the year where I can style sweater dresses like this. Sure, you could wear them with some pantyhose for an extra protective layer for your legs but that will only get you so far in Canada.
It’s not unusual for us to get snowstorms as early as October her in Southern Ontario, and to make it even worse our winters are long and harsh. I’m also a huge baby in the cold and have bad circulation, so I’m always layering up to stay warm.
Luckily, sweater dresses have lots of options for layering – seriously.
The most common way people think to do this is with a poncho/blanket scarf or a jacket, but I really love layering them with bottom pieces like leggings (fleece lined ones are perfect for those really nasty cold days) and even jeans!
My favourite way to do this is just by tucking the bottom into your jeans, or up into the bottom band of your bra if the dress is really long.

All I did here was put on one of my favourite jeans, tucked in the sweater dress and took off my hat and the look has completely changed into a much more casual outfit (and warmer) than it was before. This is also a great trick to take an outfit from day to night.
It’s amazing how such a simple change can completely change the entire vibe of an outfit – I guess it’s true what they say, the devil is in the details.
Do you have any wardrobe-hacks for transitioning your fall fashion items to winter-ready? I’d love to hear them if so!
