I really love my Cricut Joy – one of my favourite things to make on it is cards. The insert card system and Cricut Joy App makes it so incredibly easy to create a card for any occasion in just a few minutes. Currently, the app is available only for smart devices, but it’s so much faster than Design Space when it comes to making simple projects using your Cricut Joy and has thousands of different project options.
I always like to have some blank cards on hand, because you never know when you’re going to need one. There are a few different ways you can make cards using the Cricut Joy and the Insert Card system. You can make cards with cut-only designs, or you can incorporate a pen or marker with your design! For these options, you can use either Design Space or the Cricut Joy App.
Here are a few different examples:
Recently, they also launched a foil system for the Cricut Joy to give you even more options to create cards. As you all know, I was super excited when Cricut introduced their Foil Transfer System for the Maker and Explore machines last year, so naturally was super excited to get my hands on it and try it on some insert cards.
With the Cricut Joy foil system, you will need to use the Cricut Joy App in order to change the pen/marker lines to foil. If you don’t have the app already, you can download it here: Apple App Store | Google Play Store.
I really loved how all of the cards turned out, but I have to say using the foil system has to be my new favourite way to make cards with my Joy. You can actually get foil in a lot of different colours: there’s gold and silver of course, but there’s also green, aqua, purple, rose gold, red and hot pink! Personally, the hot pink and aqua are my favourite of the bunch – the colours are just absolutely stunning.
Let’s get to the tutorial!
How to make foil insert cards with the Cricut Joy
For this DIY, you’ll need:
- Cricut Joy
- Insert Card Mat
- Cricut Insert Cards, in the colour of your choice
- Cricut Joy foil transfer kit
- Cricut foil transfer sheets
- Masking tape
Step 1 – creating your design and setting up the foil system:
Open up the Cricut Joy app and pick your card design. Next, click on “start making” and select your car size then tap on next. In the next screen, you’ll be given the option to edit your design – select “edit colour” so that we can change the default settings from pen to foil (if you don’t do this, it won’t work!), simply tap on “Foil” and select your foil colour. You can also change the colour of your insert cards in this menu so you can preview what it will look like. Once you’re happy with your design and you’ve made sure foil is on, tap on the checkmark and then “next”.
On this screen, you’ll see an overview of your project. It’s now time to prep your materials!
Step 2 – preparing your materials and transferring the foil:
Place the insert card inside the card mat, as shown above. Next, remove the protective plastic sheet covering the top part of the mat and press down the front of the card so it sticks to the mat. Once that’s done, it’s time to grab your foil! Take your foil sheet and put it on top of the card, and tape down the edges using the strips of tape that came with the foil kit, or masking tape. Once you have that done, it’s time to tap on “make it” in the Cricut Joy app.
Your smart device will now prompt you to connect your machine. From there, it will prompt you to switch out the Joy blade to the foil tip, and then load the machine. Once that’s done, you can tap on “start” to start the foil transfer process.
Note: If you are making a card with a pen or marker, you would load it instead of the foil tip and select “pen” in the app.
