If you’ve been following my blog for a bit, I’m sure you’re well aware by now that I’m kind of Cricut obsessed. I recently got the Joy Xtra, so I thought I would take some time to share an unboxing, introduce you to it and go over some of the differences between it and the other machines.
What is a Cricut machine?
If you don’t know what a Cricut machine is, you are missing out. They are writing, scoring and personal cutting machines that work with a wide variety of materials. I’m talking everything from paper, vinyl, adhesive foil, craft foam, iron-on transfers, window cling and more.
I’ve made everything from iron-on shirts and pillows, gift cards, customized wine glasses, decanters, mugs, coasters, party banners and more. The crafting-possibilities really are endless with a Cricut machine – basically it’s magic!
The Cricut Joy Extra is a great machine if you want to make small to medium sized projects, but don’t have a lot of room or storage for a larger machine.
Is it easy to use?
What I really love so much about Cricut machines though is that they are so incredibly easy to use. You don’t need to be an experienced crafter or designer to make stunning DIY projects!

If this is your first Cricut machine, your Cricut Joy Xtra will also come with a free trial to Cricut Access. Cricut Access is a monthly or yearly membership that gives you access to thousands of additional fonts, images, and project instructions.
While you don’t have to have a Cricut Access subscription to use Design Space or your machine, it‘s definitely worth it in my opinion!
What can you make with the Joy Xtra?
The possibilities are endless! From personalized labels and stickers, to iron-on designs and custom cards, there’s something for everyone.
Here are the materials you can create with using the Joy Xtra and a small example what you can make with them!
Heat transfer vinyl (also known as iron-on)
- T-shirts
- Tote bags
- Hats
Vinyl
- Vinyl decals that can be added to almost any material (wood, paper, plastic, glass)
- Stickers

- Greeting cards

Using your Cricut for the first time
Once you’ve removed all of the protective packaging, connect the power cords and plug them into your Cricut Joy Xtra and then plug the machine into an outlet.
Download Design Space if you haven’t already and visit cricut.com/setup to start setting up your machine and follow the instructions on screen.
Once you’ve done that, you’re ready to start creating! If it’s your first Cricut machine, I also recommend starting with the tutorial project that comes with your machine to better familiarize yourself with your machine.
