Cricut has so many new and exciting products and materials this year! I was really excited when I heard about the new Smart Stencil material for both the Cricut Maker and Joy, and am thrilled to be able to finally share them with you in today’s post.
What is the smart stencil material?
The Smart Stencil material is a new stencil vinyl material, that allows for mat-less cutting on the Cricut Maker 3, Explore 3 and Joy. With Cricut Stencil, you can create custom stencils. It features an improved stencil material, with an adhesive backing that makes for easy application. It’s durable, yet flexible and removes without residue. It’s great for walls, glass, cavas and wood.
what machines can i use the smart stencil material on?
The Smart Stencil materials are compatable with the Cricut Explore 3, the Cricut Maker 3 and the Cricut Joy. If you have an older model of the Explore or Maker, you can use the new Cricut Flexible Stencil Film to cut with your mat.
what sizes are the stencil materials available in?
Cricut’s Stencil material is available in the following sizes:
- Smart Stencil for Joy – availalbe in 4ft or 10ft rolls
- Smart Stencil for Maker 3 or Explore 3 – availalbe in 3ft or 12ft rolls

what can you create with the smart stencil?
The possibilities are truly endless with the new stencil materials from Cricut! You can use the new stencil materials to create gorgeous murals, or customize/upsycle a variety of surfaces such as wood, canvas, ceramics with acrylic paint, spray paint, mod podge, or even etched glass cream.
Some things I’m looking forward to make using the stencil material include:
- Painted ceramic pots
- Custom door mats
- Wall murals
- Custom painted wood signs and canvases
- Etched glasses/drinkwear
how do i use the smart stencil material?
As always, the first step is to design your stencil using Cricut Design Space. You can either create your own design, or search “stencil” for ready to make projects. Once your stencil is designed, follow the prompts on screen to start cutting your stencil out with your machine.
Once your stencil is cut, simply weed out the negative space and then carefully apply your stencil to the surface you want to customize and apply your paint or etching cream over your stencil design. Once it’s dry, simply peel away the stencil material to reveal your custom piece!
I can’t wait to start creating with the Smart Stencil material and will be sure to share my projects with you all. Until next time, happy crafting!
