Today, I’m going to be showing you how to make beautiful, custom watercolour cards with your Cricut machine.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again – cards are one of my favourite things to make with my Cricut machines! I love how easy, and fun, it is to make a completely custom card in just a few minutes. So naturally, when Cricut released the Watercolour system this past fall I was so excited to try them!
About Cricut’s watercolour cards
Cricut’s watercolour cards system is available for both the Cricut Joy, and the Explore and Maker with the use of the 2×2 card mat. The cards come in one size for the Joy, and in two additional sizes that are only compatible with the Cricut Explore and Maker machines.
Card Size (in) | Joy | Explore | Maker |
4.25 x 5.5 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
4.75 x 6.6 | No | Yes | Yes |
4.75 x 4.47 | No | Yes | Yes |
The watercolour markers come in two different formats, one that is compatible with the Joy and one that is comparable with the Explore and Maker. In both versions they come in 8 different colours: red, green, blue, purple, orange, yellow, black and brown. They also come with a fillable watercolour brush pen.
how to make watercolour cards
I’ve been playing around with them for a little while now, and I’m obsessed. The process is pretty straightforward, once you’ve picked your design/image you simply insert the watercolour marker into your machine and draw your design.
Next, you use the watercolour brush to blend out your design – that’s it! Not only are they so fun and easy to make, but I personally find the blending the watercolours portion of the process to be really relaxing.
Here’s how to make your own unique cards with the watercolour markers!
Supplies needed
- Cricut Machine
- Cricut Card Mat
- Cricut Watercolour Cards
- Cricut Watercolour Markers

Step 1: prep and design your card
The watercolour cards are just as easy to use as Insert Cards – if not easier! To get started, remove the protective liner off of your card mat, insert the card and press firmly to ensure it’s secure in place.
Next, open up Cricut Design Space to create your personalized design, or use a ready-to-make project! The app is available for desktop, iOS or Android devices via the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store. Both of the images I used I found through the image library in Design Space. Resize your images to the correct size (I like to use a rectangle box as an guide) and then it’s time to get drawing!
Step 2: draw your design
Once you have selected or created your design, simply click “make it” to send the card to your Cricut machine to be drawn. You’ll be prompted to choose your materials – select card mat and then watercolour cards. Remover to also select the size of the watercolour cards you are using from the left sidebar.
Design Space will tell you which watercolour marker to load into your machine first and will prompt you when it’s time to change colours.
Once your machine is done drawing your design it’s time to unload it and make some magic happen!

Step 3: blend out your design with the watercolour brush
This is the part that I think is really relaxing once you get the hang of it! Remove your card from the card mat and grab the watercolour brush. Unscrew the lid and fill it with water, then put the lid back on tightly. Next, use the tip of the watercolour brush to blend the edges of the marker in the direction you desire to make a beautiful watercolour piece – sort of like you’re colouring inside the lines.
And voila – that’s it! I told you it was easy to make watercolour greeting cards with your Cricut. I’ve had so much fun making these and can’t wait to make some more.
